More Trouble For Adani As Kenya Cancels Multi-Billion Deals

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – President William Ruto has ordered the immediate cancellation of infrastructure deals involving the Adani Group in Kenya’s energy and aviation sectors, citing credible evidence of corruption.

He issued the directive during his State of the Nation Address on Thursday.

Ruto revealed that the decision followed reports from investigative agencies and Kenya’s international partners.

The ongoing deals included a proposed Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for the upgrade of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and a major energy project under the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO).

“The evidence presented by relevant agencies is insurmountable. In the face of undisputed evidence or credible information on corruption, I will not hesitate to take action,” Ruto said.

This comes amidst escalating international scrutiny of the Adani Group.

In the United States, Gautam Adani, the conglomerate’s chairman, is facing charges for allegedly paying Ksh.30 billion in bribes to secure solar energy supply contracts in India.

Ruto emphasized that the integrity of Kenya’s procurement processes cannot be compromised.

“Based on the new information, I have instructed the Ministries of Transport and Energy to terminate these deals immediately,” he added.

The Adani Group, which has faced global accusations of unethical practices, has yet to comment on the developments.

The cancellations follow heightened debate around transparency in the PPP processes, with critics questioning the lack of public consultation and oversight in awarding such critical contracts.
