Eveready East Africa Reinvents Itself as Integrated Clean Energy Platform

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Eveready East Africa PLC (NSE: EVRD), long synonymous with dry-cell batteries in Kenya, has announced a major strategic shift that repositions the iconic Shika Paka Pawa brand as an integrated clean energy platform spanning solar power, energy storage, clean cooking, carbon markets and electric vehicle (EV) financing.

The transformation marks Eveready’s evolution from a traditional battery manufacturer into a diversified clean energy and e-mobility player, as Kenya accelerates its transition toward renewable power and low-carbon transport.

Speaking during the announcement in Nairobi, Eveready Chief Operating Officer Sonia Karuma said the new strategy reflects the company’s ambition to play a central role in shaping the country’s energy future.

“Eveready is reimagining its role in Kenya’s energy ecosystem,” Karuma said. “Our goal is to make clean, affordable and reliable energy more accessible, while building a resilient business positioned for long-term growth.”

Integrated Clean Energy Platform

At the heart of the strategy is Eveready’s Integrated Clean Energy Platform (ICEP), a bundled offering that combines technology, financing, installation and after-sales support to deliver end-to-end energy solutions.

The platform targets a broad customer base including corporates, institutions, schools, healthcare facilities, small businesses and households, responding to rising demand for cost-effective and reliable power.

Through partnerships with Huawei Technologies and Jinko Solar, Eveready has expanded its portfolio to include commercial and industrial solar inverters, grid-connected systems, residential solar and battery backup solutions, high-efficiency solar panels, and smart energy management platforms.

According to the company, many of the solar projects are structured to become self-financing within a few years through energy savings, offering businesses a hedge against rising electricity costs and power disruptions.

Entry into EV Financing

Eveready has also made its entry into Kenya’s fast-emerging electric mobility space through a partnership with EV Jumla, launching asset-backed financing solutions for electric vehicles.

The move targets one of the key barriers to EV adoption in Kenya: high upfront costs. Under the new model, Eveready will offer financing for electric bikes and cars, flexible repayment plans for taxi drivers, delivery firms and fleet operators, and integrated charging solutions linked to renewable energy.

The initiative comes as demand for clean transport grows and financial institutions begin rolling out EV-focused lending products, positioning Eveready as a catalyst for wider adoption of electric mobility.

Carbon Markets and Climate Finance

The company’s clean energy expansion also builds on its partnership with the Regional Voluntary Carbon Market Company (RVCMC), announced at the landmark voluntary carbon credit auction held in Nairobi in June 2023.

Through this collaboration, Eveready aims to develop high-quality carbon projects that generate verified emissions reductions while unlocking new revenue streams and access to climate finance.

Positioning for Kenya’s Energy Transition

Kenya’s renewable energy market continues to expand, driven by increasing demand for reliable power, rising energy costs and government targets for a fully clean electricity mix.

With more than 70 years of brand recognition, Eveready’s strategic pivot positions it to capture new growth opportunities while contributing to environmental sustainability, financial inclusion and green job creation.

As the company enters this new chapter, it is betting that its trusted brand and integrated approach will help power Kenya’s shift toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
