NAIROBI, Kenya- The High Court has appointed the Official Receiver as the liquidator for D.T. Dobie and Company (Kenya) Limited, marking a significant development in the winding up of one of the country’s long-standing automotive firms.
The appointment, effected through a special resolution dated June 3, 2025, was made under the provisions of the Insolvency Act, 2015.
The move signals the formal commencement of the liquidation process, during which the company’s assets will be realized and its liabilities addressed.
According to the notice, creditors have until September 15, 2025, to submit full particulars of their claims by filing Proof of Debts forms through the eCitizen portal.
Claims can also be sent directly to the Liquidator or via their advocates.
“Creditors of the company are required on or before 15th September, 2025 to send full particulars of all the claims by filing their Proof of Debts,”read the notice in part.
“They may have against the company to the undersigned, the Liquidator of the company, personally or by his Advocates, to come in and prove their debts or claims set out in such notice, or in default thereof, they may be excluded from the benefit of any distribution made before such debts are proved.”
The Official Receiver, Mark Gakuru, will oversee the liquidation process, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and managing the distribution of any recovered assets.
The notice cautions that creditors who fail to lodge their claims within the stipulated timeline risk losing entitlement to any proceeds from the liquidation before their debts are formally recognized.
The insolvency of D.T. Dobie, known for decades as a leading dealer of Mercedes-Benz and other automotive brands in Kenya, marks the latest in a string of high-profile corporate collapses that have underscored challenges in the country’s business environment, including high operational costs, currency volatility, and shifting consumer demand.
The liquidation process will now move into its next phase, with the Liquidator expected to assess the company’s liabilities, recover assets, and prepare a distribution plan in accordance with Kenyan insolvency laws.
In May 2023, CFAO Group announced that D.T. Dobie transferred its business assets to CFAO Motors Kenya, effective April 1, 2023.
