The project aims to enhance Kenya’s electricity infrastructure and secure long-term power reliability.
Speaking during the signing, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi hailed the agreement as a transformative milestone in Kenya’s energy sector.
“This project will play a pivotal role in bolstering our national electricity infrastructure, ensuring reliable and widespread access to power that will support Kenya’s growing economy,” Wandayi said.
Under the terms of the 30-year agreement, Adani Energy Solutions will manage the transmission infrastructure, ensuring sustainability and operational efficiency.
At the end of the contract, the project and all its assets will be transferred to Ketraco, securing local ownership of the infrastructure.
The Cabinet Secretary acknowledged the ongoing power challenges facing the nation, particularly frequent blackouts, and expressed confidence that this project would alleviate such issues.
“This initiative will address the persistent power outages that continue to challenge our country, ensuring more stable energy access,” Wandayi stated.
The project, which has been in the works for four months, will be fully financed by Adani Energy Solutions through a combination of debt and equity, with no financial expenditure from the government.
The CS emphasized that the total cost of the project would be finalised through a competitive bidding process jointly conducted by Ketraco and Adani.
“This competitive bidding will ensure significant value for money while prioritizing local content and business opportunities for Kenyans,” Wandayi added.
Local businesses and suppliers stand to benefit, as the project will prioritize Kenyan companies in procurement and construction.
Wandayi emphasized that the collaboration with Adani Energy Solutions represents a strategic partnership aligned with the government’s development goals, enhancing not only energy infrastructure but also economic growth.
“The government remains committed to supporting the timely and successful implementation of transformative projects like this, which will contribute to Kenya’s economic and social transformation,” he said.
The agreement with Adani Energy Solutions is part of Kenya’s broader agenda to improve energy infrastructure and secure future energy supply, ensuring that the country can meet its growing electricity demands as it pursues industrialization and sustainable development.
Wandayi concluded by underscoring the importance of strategic partnerships in driving the nation’s progress.
“This project underscores the government’s commitment to securing the future of Kenya’s energy supply through world-class infrastructure, managed by competent partners,” he said.
