NAIROBI, Kenya- A multi-million shilling renewable energy project in Nairobi’s Kibera might never kick-off, after the main financier exited.
The African Development Bank (AfDB) exited the project due to delays in procuring services.
In January 2018, AfDB awarded a Sh128.8 million grant for the planned 12 megawatt Kibera Waster-to-Energy plant for initial development.
This was meant to help attract other investors, but nothing has since happened due to procurement delays, 6 years later.
According to a report by Business Daily, the project implementer, a privately owned Asticom Kenya Limited, managed to only complete one of the three desired outputs of the grant.
This forced the bank to cancel the grant after giving the company an initial Sh16.8 million.
“he grant expired before all activities could be concluded, due to many procurement related delays,” AfDB said in a report.
“None of the outputs was fully achieved, only one was partially achieved. This was due to procurement related issues.”
