NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenyan e-mobility company Roam is charging forward with plans to transform urban transport in Nairobi, thanks to new funding from Energica.
The investment will enable Roam to set up 10 additional solar-powered charging stations, bringing its total to 15 hubs across the city.
These stations will cater to Nairobi’s growing fleet of electric motorcycles, supporting the shift toward cleaner, affordable, and sustainable transport options.
The funding infusion from Energica allows Roam to address a critical challenge in electric vehicle adoption: access to reliable, flexible charging.
Each new “Roam Hub” will provide electric motorcycle riders with convenient battery rentals and optimized charging solutions, designed specifically for Nairobi’s unique needs.
With an expected 400-500 daily transactions per hub, Roam aims to streamline charging and battery rental processes, accelerating the growth of electric mobility in Kenya’s capital city.
The hubs are built with open architecture, allowing seamless interoperability across different types of electric motorcycles.
This flexibility means riders can charge at various speeds and locations, making electric vehicle use more convenient and accessible.
“This initiative is a game-changer for electric mobility in Kenya and across Africa,” said Habib Lukaya, Roam’s Product Manager for Energy and Charging.
“By tackling the challenge of charging infrastructure, we’re breaking down a major barrier to adoption and fostering sustainable growth in e-mobility.”
Roam’s expansion is part of a broader, EU-backed initiative, Horizon 2020, designed to support sustainable technology development in Africa.
Energica’s investment connects Africa and Europe in the fight against climate change, energy access issues, and urban pollution.
Nadia Moussaid, Energica’s Collaborative Project Manager, highlighted the partnership’s impact: “Together, we’re building resilient, low-emission transport networks that empower communities and create sustainable jobs.”
These solar-powered hubs are more than just charging stations—they represent a shift toward greener, self-sufficient urban transport in cities like Nairobi and Kisumu.
By opting for solar energy, Roam Hubs offer savings of Ksh 10-15 per kWh compared to traditional electricity, making electric transport an even more affordable option for everyday users.
With the latest funding, Roam is poised to lead Kenya’s e-mobility revolution, creating a blueprint for clean urban transport in Africa.
Each charging hub is a step toward reducing emissions, improving air quality, and delivering accessible and affordable electric transport solutions.
As Kenya’s urban areas expand, Roam’s solar hubs could become the foundation for a new era of green mobility, offering economic and environmental benefits that extend well beyond Nairobi’s borders.
Roam’s journey is not just about electric bikes and charging stations; it’s about redefining urban transportation in Africa, one solar-powered hub at a time.
