Spiro Opens New Manufacturing Facility in Nairobi, Accelerates Africa’s Electric Mobility Revolution

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Electric mobility in Africa just got a significant boost. Spiro, the e-bike manufacturer, has officially opened its new manufacturing centre on Old Mombasa Road in Nairobi.

This facility is a major milestone for Spiro, aiming to produce thousands of electric bikes and batteries each year, furthering the company’s expansion across the continent.

Spiro’s new Nairobi-based manufacturing facility is a hub of opportunity for local talent. The company is launching the Spiro Academy, an initiative designed to upskill the workforce, particularly focusing on electric bike and battery manufacturing and assembly.

The Academy is part of Spiro’s larger mission to empower youth and support female employment within the community.

CEO Kaushik Burman emphasized the broader goals at the factory’s opening: “A core part of our mission is to support youth employment and empower women. This factory and the Spiro Academy are crucial steps toward achieving these goals, creating valuable opportunities for local individuals and contributing to the community’s growth.”

Spiro’s commitment to nurturing local talent aligns with broader efforts across Africa to foster homegrown solutions to technological challenges.

And they’re already making waves—just one month after starting operations in Kenya, Spiro deployed its 1,000th e-bike, with more to come as the factory ramps up to full capacity.

Beyond manufacturing, Spiro is revolutionizing how electric bikes are powered. Their battery swapping technology gives riders unprecedented flexibility, providing access to a network of swapping stations, fast and slow chargers, and even home charging options.

This eliminates the need for long charging stops and ensures that energy is always available when and where it’s needed.

At the heart of this innovation is Spiro’s State of Charge (SoC) technology, which optimizes the riding experience by offering an efficient and eco-friendly transportation solution.

As electric mobility becomes more prominent in Africa, Spiro’s tech-forward model is setting the standard for what the future of e-biking can look like.

While Spiro’s electric bikes are bringing sustainable transportation to Kenya, the impact goes far beyond the bikes themselves.

The company’s commitment to social and economic empowerment is clear through its actions. “We are incredibly proud of the positive influence our manufacturing centre and Academy have on the community,” said Raymond Kitunga, Spiro’s Deputy head.

“Spiro’s commitment to delivering social, economic, and environmental benefits through our EV production in Kenya is evident in the opportunities we are creating and the sustainable solutions we are providing,” Kitunga added.
