Are ‘dynasties’ having the last laugh in Kenyan Politics?

Date:

By Shazia Majale,

NAIROBI, Kenya- Dynasties are seemingly having the last laugh in the pandemonium that is Kenyan politics and if Raila’s words are anything to go by, the former president Uhuru Kenyatta must be having the loudest laugh of them all.

It is typical of politicians to utter words while in the heat of the moment only to make a fool of themselves later when realigning their interests.

Many hard stances have come crashing down faster than the infamous tower of Babel. And, in this current “handshake” that’s left many flat-footed, one man might be credited with it.

In the past election fallouts between the opposition, more specifically Raila Odinga and the ruling government, we’ve heard and read of how Mama Ngina Kenyatta stepped in in the nick of time to encourage conversations.

The most recent Gen Z-led demonstrations, however, apparently have Uhuru Kenyatta to thank for brokering talks between Raila Odinga and His Excellency the President.

The foul cry from President Ruto while campaigning about dynasties undermining his campaign and cahooting to derail him may have won him the seat on the hill.

What’s evident, though, is that left to his own devices, the house almost caught fire, and some ‘dynasties’ had to step in to manage to put the little fires around it out.

Since handing over power, the former president has steered off active politics and until last week only made news when the Kenyan Kwanza administration was bedeviled with a supposed witch-hunt that alleged him as the financial muscle behind Azimio’s then protests.

A man of few words, he’s seemingly minding his business and his mouth, too, as all the yada yada is being done by those with evidently things to lose and their political offspring.

An elite child born into the structure, guided by the structures and acting accordingly as expected by his kind, Uhuru Kenyatta keeps active politics at arm’s length and presents himself as a noble statesman.

In the fashion of his mum, he is cool, calm, collected and only acts/utters when necessary.

Hustling sure gets you a place at the table, but it’s the dynasties that keep you there!
