NAIROBI, Kenya- Residents in Nairobi and neighbouring counties have been urged to remain alert as heavy rainfall continues across the Nairobi Metropolitan region, with the peak period expected to run until March 9.
According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, the current Heavy Rainfall Advisory No. 02/2026 remains in effect until 7 pm on March 9, warning of continued moderate to heavy showers and possible flash floods across several counties.
The department says rainfall exceeding 20 millimetres within 24 hours is expected to continue across large parts of the country, with rainfall intensifying between March 4 and March 7 before gradually easing in most areas.
Areas likely to receive heavy rainfall
In Nairobi County, widespread downpours are expected in several sub-counties, including Westlands, Dagoretti, Roysambu, Kibra, Embakasi, Makadara, Kamukunji, Lang’ata, Kasarani and Mathare.
Neighbouring Kiambu County is also forecast to experience significant rainfall accumulations, particularly in Gatundu North, Gatundu South, Thika Town, Juja, Ruiru, Limuru, Kikuyu, Githunguri and Kiambu Town, with some areas potentially receiving 40–80 millimetres of rain.
In Machakos County, heavy showers are expected in Masinga, Mavoko, Kathiani and Machakos Town, while Kajiado County is likely to experience intense rainfall in the northern parts, particularly Kajiado North.

Risk of flooding and poor visibility
The weatherman warned that the ongoing rainfall could lead to flash floods in low-lying areas, poor visibility on roads, and rising river levels, especially downstream areas.
“Residents in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and watch out for potential floods and flash floods,” the department said in the advisory.
Authorities also cautioned that floodwaters may appear in areas where rainfall has not been heavy, particularly along river basins and drainage channels.
Safety advisory
Members of the public have been advised to:
- Avoid driving or walking through moving floodwaters
- Stay away from trees and open fields during thunderstorms
- Exercise caution due to slippery roads and reduced visibility
The Kenya Meteorological Department said it will continue monitoring the weather patterns and provide updates if there are changes in the forecast.
Heavy rains are expected to affect several regions across the country, including parts of Central Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, southeastern lowlands and the Coastal region, until early next week.
