Hemingways Collection Partners with Maa Trust To Build Maternity Facility in Maasai Mara

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- In a heartwarming move set to transform maternal healthcare in the Maasai Mara, Hemingways Collection has partnered with the Maa Trust to construct a state-of-the-art maternity facility.

This new facility, valued at Ksh. 66 million, will include an operating theatre, a neonatal high-dependency unit, and a maternity shelter designed to offer a safe haven for high-risk expectant and postpartum mothers.

Last year, the Maa Trust spearheaded a fundraising campaign for the construction of a maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) facility at CHP Talek Health Centre.

The project, completed earlier this year, was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Hemingways Collection, the MPESA Foundation, Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation, John and Jennifer Guistina Family Fund, and the Narok County Government, among others.

Speaking at the announcement, Hemingways Collection CEO Ross Evans highlighted the hotel’s commitment to ongoing support.

Hemingways Nairobi and Hemingways Ol Seki will contribute Ksh. 260 (USD 2) and Ksh. 650 (USD 5) per bed night respectively, ensuring continuous funding for the MNCH facility’s operations.

“We have so far contributed Ksh. 1.9 million (USD 14,500) to the facility,” said Evans. “We encourage our guests to visit the Maa Trust Headquarters to learn more about the organization and its incredible impact on the community and conservation in the Mara ecosystem.”

The new facility’s funding will support the salaries of doctors, anaesthetists, and nurses, ensuring quality medical care for mothers and babies.

Tailored to high-risk pregnancies, including adolescent mothers, the centre integrates the Daktari Smart telemedicine program, which allows for seamless access to specialist consultations from Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital without the need for travel to Nairobi.

To further support the health centre, visitors can purchase Mama Kits, packed with essential items for new mums and babies.

These kits are available at Hemingways Ol Seki’s gift shop, with proceeds directly benefiting the MNCH facility.

The partnership between Hemingways Collection and the Maa Trust marks a significant step towards improving maternal healthcare in the Maasai Mara.
