GATUNDU NORTH, Kenya — The Kamwangi Modern Market in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, is now 80pc complete, raising hopes for improved working conditions and stronger economic activity for local traders who have long operated in overcrowded and poorly serviced facilities.
Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo said finishing works are underway, including painting, welding, terrazzo preparation, staircase metal works, and screeding, as the government moves closer to delivering the modern market.
The new facility includes a basement level with a cold room, storage areas, washrooms, and utility rooms.
The ground floor will host administrative offices, an ICT hub, a mothers’ room, washrooms and utility spaces, while the first floor will feature a social hall and kitchen.
To ensure an uninterrupted water supply, the project has been fitted with a 40,000-litre elevated water tank and a 50,000-litre underground reservoir.
Beyond infrastructure, the project has already had a strong economic impact, creating 150 on-site jobs, most of them taken up by youth and women, offering much-needed income and skills opportunities in the area.
Dr. Omollo credited the State Department for Interior and National Administration for providing coordination and oversight, saying strong government support has ensured smooth progress, stable operations, and effective engagement with stakeholders.
Once completed, the Kamwangi Modern Market is expected to transform the trading environment in Gatundu North by improving sanitation, organisation, and business dignity for hundreds of traders.
