Kenya, Germany Reaffirm Bilateral Ties Ahead of Foreign Minister Visit

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations following high-level talks between Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and German Ambassador to Kenya Sebastian Groth, ahead of an official visit by Germany’s Foreign Minister later this month.

In a statement issued by the State Department for Foreign Affairs, the meeting focused on expanding cooperation in key strategic areas, including labour mobility, climate change, renewable energy, regional security, and multilateral engagement.

Mudavadi reiterated Kenya’s commitment to advancing the Bilateral Labour Mobility Agreement, describing it as a critical framework for creating structured employment opportunities for Kenyans abroad while addressing skills gaps in partner countries.

“Kenya remains committed to implementing the Bilateral Labour Mobility Agreement and welcomes Germany’s continued support, particularly in renewable energy development,” Mudavadi said.

The discussions also covered climate action and clean energy, with both sides underscoring the importance of accelerating investments in renewable energy as part of broader efforts to support sustainable development and climate resilience.

On regional security, the two leaders exchanged views on ongoing peace and stability initiatives in the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region, areas that continue to face conflict, humanitarian pressures, and political instability.

Mudavadi emphasised Kenya’s role in regional diplomacy and peacebuilding, particularly through multilateral platforms.

The talks further extended to global security issues, including the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, reflecting Kenya’s growing diplomatic engagement beyond the continent and its advocacy for the peaceful resolution of conflicts through international cooperation.

According to the Foreign Affairs department, the meeting reaffirmed the strong partnership between Kenya and Germany, anchored on shared values of sustainable development, global stability, and rules-based international order.

The engagement comes ahead of the official visit by Germany’s Foreign Minister, Dr Johann Wadephul, scheduled for January 21–22, 2026.

During the visit, Dr Wadephul is expected to hold talks with Prime Cabinet Secretary Mudavadi and President William Ruto, focusing on deepening political, economic, and development cooperation.

Kenya and Germany have long-standing ties spanning development cooperation, trade, education, and climate action.

Germany remains one of Kenya’s key European partners, particularly in development financing and renewable energy investments.
