NEMA Hosts US Delegation to Strengthen Chemical Security in Kenya

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) today hosted a delegation from the United States’ Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) to introduce the Chemical Security Program (CSP) and explore collaborative opportunities with NEMA and partner agencies.

The discussions highlighted NEMA’s pivotal role in regulating hazardous chemicals, including licensing, enforcement, disposal of chemical waste, and implementing measures to address Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) risks to protect public health and the environment.

Both parties emphasized the need for stronger partnerships to enhance chemical security in Kenya through capacity building, improved emergency preparedness, the development of a national CBRN register, and better inter-agency coordination.

The collaboration marks a major step toward sound chemical management and security, supporting sustainable development and a safer, more resilient future for Kenya.
