NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya’s presidential jet, Harambee One, has returned to the country after spending nearly a year in the Netherlands undergoing extensive maintenance, interior refurbishment and major technology upgrades.
The Kenya Air Force Fokker 70, registration KAF308, returned home last month following an extensive hangar visit by aviation maintenance specialists Fokker Services Group.
The aircraft, which has served as Kenya’s Head of State jet for more than three decades, underwent deep maintenance alongside upgrades to its interior and onboard systems.
Harambee One receives major technology upgrades
One of the most significant additions was the installation of the Gogo Business Aviation FDX Satcom system, giving the aircraft advanced in-flight connectivity capabilities.
Fokker Services Group confirmed completion of the maintenance programme in a statement shared on its official social media platforms.
The company described the work as an extensive hangar visit involving deep maintenance, interior upgrades and systems improvements.
It also highlighted the installation of the latest Gogo Business Aviation FDX Satcom system.
Fokker Services Group praised the Kenya Air Force team for maintaining the aircraft over the years, describing KAF308 as one of the last Fokker 70 aircraft built and delivered.
Aircraft tested in the Netherlands
Photos shared by Fokker Services Group showed KAF308 flying over the Oosterschelde in the Netherlands during a Customer Acceptance Flight following completion of the maintenance and upgrade programme.
Aviation photographer Ben Ullings, whose photographs were shared by the company, said he accompanied the aircraft during its approach and landing after a test flight.
Ullings said air traffic controllers at Woensdrecht enabled the Cessna 210 aircraft he was travelling in to accompany KAF308 during its approach and touchdown.
He later shared a selection of photographs from the flight, while indicating that additional images would be published later.
The test flight formed part of the process preceding the aircraft’s return to Kenya.
What is the Gogo FDX Satcom system?
The installation of the FDX Satcom system represents one of the most notable technology upgrades to the ageing presidential aircraft.
FDX is designed to provide high-speed satellite connectivity while an aircraft is in flight.
The system is based on satellite communications technology and is intended to support two-way data transmission, allowing aircraft to maintain connectivity with ground-based networks while airborne.
For government, military and VIP aircraft, such connectivity can support secure communications, data transfer and other operational requirements.
The upgrade could therefore give Kenya’s presidential aircraft capabilities that were not available when the Fokker 70 originally entered service.
KAF308 conducting local flights
Despite returning to Kenya, KAF308 has not yet undertaken an international trip since its arrival.
Available flight activity indicates that the aircraft has instead been conducting local operational and test flights.
Operating under the callsign FLOK100, KAF308 has made domestic flights involving Nairobi, Mombasa and Malindi between August 25 and September 1.
President William Ruto has also not officially used the refurbished aircraft for an international journey or a local presidential trip since its return.
The aircraft’s domestic operations suggest that authorities may still be conducting post-maintenance checks and operational activities following the lengthy overhaul.
Nearly a year away for maintenance
The return of Harambee One ends a nearly year-long period during which the presidential aircraft was outside Kenya for maintenance and refurbishment.
Its absence meant the government had to make alternative arrangements for some presidential travel.
The Fokker 70 has been part of Kenya’s presidential fleet since the 1990s and has served several presidents.
Its distinctive role as the Head of State aircraft has made KAF308 one of the most recognisable aircraft operated by the Kenya Air Force.
What the overhaul means for Harambee One
The extensive maintenance and technology upgrades are expected to improve the aircraft’s operational capabilities and potentially extend its useful service life.
However, the return of KAF308 also raises broader questions about the future of Kenya’s presidential air transport fleet.
The Fokker 70 is an ageing aircraft by modern aviation standards, although its airframe has continued to receive maintenance and upgrades.
Fokker Services Group’s comments indicate that the aircraft has been maintained to a high standard, while the latest overhaul adds modern systems to an airframe that has served the country for decades.
