TANA RIVER, Kenya – Heavy rains along Kenya’s Coast region have triggered flooding in Tana River County, displacing 302 households after two dams in Tana Delta overflowed and sent water into nearby villages and homes.
The Kenya Red Cross Society said Tulu and Minjila dams had overflowed, flooding settlements and affecting a further 3,156 households.
The situation is also raising concern in neighbouring Lamu County, where some homes in Hindi and Witu have started experiencing flooding as the rains continue.
According to the Red Cross, 175 of the 302 displaced households in Tana River have so far received emergency assistance, including food, tarpaulins and blankets supplied by the county and national governments.
The remaining displaced families are expected to receive support as relief operations continue.
Red Cross teams and partner organisations remain on the ground assessing the scale of the damage and identifying the needs of affected communities.
The flooding comes as heavy rainfall continues across parts of the Coast region, increasing the risk of further displacement and damage to homes and property.
Authorities and humanitarian agencies are monitoring the situation as they work to support affected families and respond to emerging needs.
