NAIROBI, Kenya- DCP Leader Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed President William Ruto’s “Usawa ni Sawa” slogan, describing it as a “long con” ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a KTN interview on Wednesday, Gachagua criticised the President’s new political message as he questioned the promise of equality behind the slogan.
Ruto has been using “Usawa ni Sawa, Mbele Pamoja” — “Equality is fair, forward together” — during public engagements and UDA events.
The slogan puts equitable development and inclusion at the centre of Ruto’s pitch to voters.
The President has said his administration is spreading development across the country and challenged his opponents to offer alternative policies.
Gachagua’s “long con” label casts the slogan as political messaging that voters should question.
Ruto presents slogan as an equality agenda
Ruto introduced the slogan during political engagements in October and promoted it at the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Eldoret.
He has framed it as a commitment to fair development and opportunities for Kenyans across the country, moving his campaign message away from the “Hustler” identity that featured prominently in his 2022 campaign.
The President has also challenged the opposition to present policies and programmes rather than focus only on criticism of his government.
His allies have defended “Usawa ni Sawa” as a message of inclusion and equitable access to development.
Political contest gathers pace
Gachagua’s criticism comes as political parties and leaders sharpen their messages ahead of the next election.
The former Deputy President has been consulting opposition leaders, including Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Linda Mwananchi figures, as they discuss the possibility of fielding one presidential candidate.
The President has promoted equality and development as his agenda, while Gachagua has challenged the credibility of that message.
