Kenya Lauded for Environmental Leadership at Partnerships Day Hosted by Canada

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- During the Opening of Partnerships Day, hosted by Canada ahead of the fourth round of negotiations on the plastic pollution instrument, Kenya stood out for its exceptional leadership in tackling plastic pollution.

In a compelling address, Inger Andersen, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), praised Kenya’s proactive stance in combating environmental degradation.

Andersen highlighted Kenya’s groundbreaking decision in 2017 to ban single-use plastic bags, a move that reverberated globally and inspired similar actions in other nations.

She commended Kenya’s private sector for swiftly adapting to the ban by transitioning to the production of reusable tote bags, showcasing the power of private sector innovation in driving sustainable solutions.

The success of Kenya’s plastic bag ban serves as a testament to the country’s commitment to environmental conservation.

Andersen emphasized the need for innovative funding mechanisms to support the transition to a circular economy, where waste is minimized, and resources are reused and recycled.

She lauded the recent commitment of 160 financial institutions representing 15.5 trillion USD in assets to the UNEP Finance Initiative’s Finance Statement on Plastic Pollution as a significant step towards mobilizing private finance for sustainable solutions.

Kenya’s leadership extends beyond its actions within its borders. Andersen called for continued support for Kenya and other nations at the forefront of the fight against plastic pollution.

She emphasized the importance of a just transition that considers the needs of all stakeholders, including the 20 million waste pickers who form the backbone of the global sanitation workforce.

As the world marks Earth Day 2024, Kenya’s example shines brightly as a beacon of hope and progress.

Andersen urged nations to follow Kenya’s lead and embrace sustainable practices to protect nature and its resources for future generations.

She emphasized that the fight against plastic pollution requires collective action and a commitment to creating a more sustainable world for all.
