NAIROBI, Kenya- At the United Nations Day 2024 celebrations, Kenya made a bold statement about its continued commitment to working closely with the United Nations to address global challenges and promote sustainable development.
Margaret Ndung’u, Cabinet Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy, highlighted Kenya’s strong partnership with the UN, emphasizing the country’s role in global initiatives such as Agenda 2030, regional support in the Horn of Africa and Great Lakes, and tackling interconnected crises like climate change.
Ndung’u used the occasion to rally support for elevating Nairobi’s status as a hub for environmental diplomacy.
“Kenya remains unwavering in its support for the United Nations Office at Nairobi,” she said, encouraging attendees to amplify efforts that enhance the city’s global environmental role.
She invited the international community to further strengthen Nairobi’s position, particularly as it relates to sustainability and environmental action.
Ndung’u also praised the UN’s role over the past 79 years, noting the organization’s pivotal role in fostering global cooperation.
She congratulated the UN family in Kenya and reiterated the country’s dedication to working with the UN to foster an inclusive, secure, and prosperous future for all.
In her address, Ndung’u challenged global leaders to ensure that the UN’s commitment to an inclusive digital transformation benefits future generations.
She stressed the importance of localizing the Pact for the Future, noting that the theme of this year’s celebration, “Bringing the Pact Home,” reflects Kenya’s aim to turn global aspirations into tangible, local outcomes.
“I call upon all of us—governments, civil society, the private sector, and especially our young people—to unite in this effort,” Ndung’u urged.
Ndung’u also announced the upcoming expansion of the UN offices in Nairobi, which are set to begin next year and conclude by 2030.
This expansion will establish UNON as a state-of-the-art complex, positioning it as a model comparable to other UN headquarters globally.
“Upon completion, we hope this iconic complex will enhance the delivery of programs and mandates,” she concluded, underlining the critical role the expansion will play in UN operations in the region.
