KWALE, Kenya — Kenya is set to host the 2025 Confederation of African Cycling (CAC) Road Cycling African Championships from November 19 to 23, an event expected to bring together elite cyclists from across the continent and cement the country’s growing profile as a premier sports destination.
Announcing the event, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said the championship — which will feature teams and professional cyclists from 13 African nations — marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s sports tourism journey.
“On behalf of the Government of Kenya, I am delighted to welcome you to the 2025 CAC Road Cycling African Championships in Kwale County,” Mvurya said.
“This world-class championship will showcase extraordinary skill, endurance, and sportsmanship, reinforcing Kenya’s status as a continental and global sports hub.”
The CS commended the County Government of Kwale, led by Governor Fatuma Achani, for its collaboration in hosting the event, noting that the partnership demonstrates the power of sports in driving economic growth and community empowerment.
“I commend the County Government of Kwale for its seamless collaboration and commitment to unlocking our shared vision of sports tourism — stimulating the local economy, creating employment opportunities, and promoting Kenya’s natural beauty and hospitality,” he said.
The championship is expected to draw hundreds of athletes, officials, and spectators, boosting hospitality, transport, and trade sectors in the coastal county.
It also underscores Kenya’s readiness to host more international sports competitions under the government’s plan to diversify tourism and strengthen regional integration through sports diplomacy.
Mvurya urged Kenyans to turn out in large numbers to support the national team, saying public enthusiasm will play a key role in motivating athletes and showcasing Kenya’s warm spirit.
“I call upon the people of Kwale and Kenyans across the country to come out in your numbers, celebrate our cyclists, and proudly support #TeamKenya throughout the championship,” he said.
The event is part of the broader push by the Ministry of Sports and Tourism to position Kenya not only as a traditional athletics powerhouse but also as a versatile destination for emerging sports, including cycling, motorsport, and water sports — all aligned with the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
With scenic coastal routes and challenging terrain, Kwale County offers an ideal setting for a world-class road cycling competition that blends athletic excellence with tourism promotion.
