Kenya Weather Forecast: Early Rains, Hot Days and Cool Nights in the First Week of 2026

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast early-week rainfall followed by mostly sunny and dry conditions across large parts of the country, covering the period from December 30, 2025, to January 5, 2026.

According to the weekly outlook, rains are expected to continue in a few areas at the start of the week, particularly in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of north-western and north-eastern Kenya, the Coastal region, and the south-eastern lowlands.

The department warned that isolated thunderstorms and episodes of heavy rainfall may occur in some of these regions, raising the risk of localised flooding, especially in low-lying and poorly drained areas.

However, the weather is expected to improve as the week progresses, with predominantly sunny and dry conditions forecast over much of the country towards the end of the week.

This transition marks a gradual shift from the short rains season into drier conditions typical of early January.

Hot Daytime Temperatures Expected

The weatherman also cautioned that hot daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C are likely in several regions. These include the Coastal strip, north-eastern and north-western Kenya, parts of the south-eastern lowlands, as well as sections of the Rift Valley and Western Kenya.

Residents in these areas have been advised to take precautions against heat stress, particularly during peak afternoon hours, by staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

Cold Nights in Highlands and Rift Valley

Despite the expected daytime heat, cold nights are forecast in parts of the country.

Minimum temperatures below 10°C are expected in the Central Highlands, the North and Central Rift Valley, Western Kenya, and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The department advised residents in these regions to keep warm, especially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.

The Kenya Meteorological Department continues to urge the public, farmers, and disaster management agencies to stay updated with daily forecasts and advisories, as weather conditions may change.
