Kenya Weather Update: Rain, Hot Dry Conditions and Strong Winds

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued its latest weather forecast for Friday, 20th February 2026, warning of a mix of rainfall, hot dry conditions, and strong winds across the country.

According to KMD, showers and thunderstorms are expected over parts of Western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Central Highlands (including Nairobi), and portions of the South-Eastern Lowlands and Coast.

These rains are likely to develop during the afternoon and continue into the evening, bringing relief to areas that have experienced dry spells in recent weeks.

Residents of Nairobi and other highland counties are advised to carry umbrellas and take caution during the afternoon hours as localized heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected.

Meanwhile, hot and dry conditions are forecast over several regions, including the North-Eastern and North-Western lowlands, South-Eastern areas, and coastal regions, where sunny skies are expected to dominate throughout the day.

Temperatures in these areas could rise significantly, prompting KMD to advise vulnerable populations to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.

In addition, strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s) are expected in Turkana and Marsabit counties, posing potential risks for dust storms and disruptions to outdoor activities.

Authorities have urged residents and transport operators in these areas to exercise caution.

The Meteorological Department encourages Kenyans to stay updated with the latest advisories and take necessary precautions during periods of rainfall, thunderstorms, or high winds, particularly in areas prone to flooding or other weather-related hazards.

With the ongoing variability in weather patterns, KMD reminds the public that conditions can change rapidly, and real-time updates are available through their official website and social media platforms.
