Kenyan Agripreneur Kevin Getobai Named 2024 SDG Pioneer By UN

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- In a significant achievement for Kenya, Kevin Getobai, founder of Ololo Farm and Lodge, has been awarded the prestigious 2024 SDG Pioneer title by the United Nations Global Compact

Getobai received the recognition during the UN General Assembly’s Leaders Summit, making him the third Kenyan to win the award since its inception in 2019.

Getobai was celebrated in the Africa Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) category for his innovative contributions to sustainable agriculture.

His groundbreaking work focuses on transformative farming practices designed to tackle critical issues such as food security and environmental sustainability.

One of his key innovations is the conversion of organic waste into valuable organic manure and protein for livestock, achieved through the use of Black Soldier Flies (BSF) in composting.

This not only aligns with global efforts to reduce waste but also supports the broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030.

With agriculture at the core of many sustainability challenges, Getobai’s approach exemplifies how businesses can spearhead solutions that address both local and global environmental concerns.

The SDG Pioneers program, established by the United Nations Global Compact, honors individuals who are making remarkable strides in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

These pioneers embody the UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles, which cover essential areas like human rights, environmental stewardship, labor standards, and anti-corruption.

By spotlighting these changemakers, the program underscores the power of business as a force for good.

Sandra Ojiambo, CEO and Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, praised the 2024 SDG Pioneers for showcasing how innovative business strategies can create positive global change.

“Kevin’s achievement is a powerful statement of Kenya’s commitment to sustainability and responsible business. He’s setting a benchmark for others to follow,” Njino said.

The 2024 SDG Pioneer winners were selected from a diverse pool of nominees representing regions like Western Europe, North America, Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Oceania.

Getobai’s win adds to Kenya’s growing reputation as a hub for innovative sustainable business solutions.
