NAIROBI, Kenya — The Board of the National Transport and Safety Authority has appointed Nashon Kondiwa as the new Director General for a three-year term starting February 17, 2026.
The appointment was made in consultation with the Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Roads and Transport, according to a statement signed by Board Chairman Khatib Abdallah Mwashetani.
Kondiwa has over 22 years’ experience in information and communication technology, innovation, intelligent transport systems and public sector leadership.
Before his appointment, he served as Deputy Director in charge of ICT at NTSA, where he oversaw the authority’s digital transformation and service delivery systems.
He now takes over leadership at the agency responsible for vehicle registration, driver licensing and enforcement of road transport regulations in Kenya.
Kondiwa will serve a three-year term, effective February 17, 2026.
NTSA’s responsibilities include registering and licensing motor vehicles, conducting vehicle inspections and certifications, and overseeing the training, testing and licensing of drivers.
The authority also regulates public service vehicles, develops and implements road safety strategies, and advises the government on policy matters relating to road transport and safety.
To reduce road crashes and related fatalities, NTSA carries out road safety audits and awareness campaigns, enforces traffic compliance, and works with other agencies and county governments to improve safety outcomes.
It maintains databases of vehicles and drivers, conducts research and analysis on transport trends, and collaborates with stakeholders to promote safer road use.
In recent years, NTSA’s role has expanded with amendments to the NTSA Act aimed at strengthening its regulatory and enforcement powers across areas such as licensing compliance and safety audits.
