NAIROBI, Kenya – President William Ruto has announced the government’s plan to construct a 60-kilometre expressway connecting Nairobi City to Thika town in Kiambu County, a project aimed at easing traffic congestion along the busy Thika road.
Speaking at the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium on Friday, December 12, President Ruto said the expressway would begin at the Museum Hill interchange, near the existing Nairobi Expressway, and terminate in Thika town.
“A lot of Kenyans live in Thika, and the current Thika road is very congested, with heavy vehicle traffic. Next year, we will construct an expressway from Thika to Nairobi at Museum Hill,” he said, emphasizing that the project would facilitate faster and more efficient movement of people and goods.
The President did not provide a specific start date, though he indicated that construction is expected to commence in 2026.
In addition to the Thika-Nairobi expressway, Ruto outlined plans to build other major roads linking Nairobi to neighbouring counties, including Kajiado and Machakos.
The announcement aligns with ongoing efforts by the Kiambu County Government to elevate Thika to the status of Kenya’s fifth city.
