MACHAKOS, Kenya — President William Ruto on Friday handed over keys to 176 new homeowners at the newly completed Machakos Boma Yangu Estate, marking a major milestone in the government’s affordable housing agenda.
The estate, delivered under the Boma Yangu platform, is designed as a model for social integration by offering units across all income brackets.
President Ruto said the project demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring equitable and dignified living for all Kenyans.
“As a model for social integration, the estate provides housing across all income categories. This ensures equitable access and encourages diverse, inclusive communities to flourish within the same development,” he said during the handover ceremony.
Strategic Location and Boost to Local Economy
Lands and Housing Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome noted that the estate has direct access to key public facilities including Machakos University, KMTC Machakos Campus, Machakos High School, Machakos Level 5 Hospital and the county retail market — a factor she said enhances the estate’s appeal for working families and students.
Wahome added that more than 450 jobs were created during construction, benefiting local youth, artisans and suppliers.
She highlighted that 39 artisans were also assessed and certified under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme, boosting their employability.
More Units Coming Under Phase II
Affordable Housing Board Acting CEO Sheila Waweru encouraged Kenyans to register and save through the Boma Yangu platform, saying allocation is fair and transparent.
Phase I of the Machakos project consists of 220 units — 60 studio apartments, 40 one-bedroom units, 60 two-bedroom units and 60 three-bedroom units.
President Ruto also broke ground for Phase II, which will deliver 570 additional units and create jobs for more than 500 workers daily.
Amenities planned for the next phase include a clubhouse with a swimming pool, an ECD school, and a shopping mall, alongside other supporting infrastructure expected to enhance the estate’s livability.
