World Vision Targets 13.3 Million Children in New Five-Year Strategy

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- World Vision Kenya has launched an ambitious five-year national strategy aimed at transforming the lives of 13.3 million children across 33 counties, with a strong focus on climate resilience, water access, child protection, and strategic partnerships.

The 2026–2030 National Strategy was officially unveiled on Monday at a Nairobi hotel by the Principal Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Eng. Festus Ng’eno, who called for stronger collaboration between government, development partners, faith actors, and the private sector to address mounting environmental and socio-economic challenges.

Speaking during the launch, Dr Ng’eno said the strategy comes at a critical moment as Kenya grapples with the effects of climate change, water insecurity, and persistent vulnerability among children and marginalised communities.

“The success of these efforts must ultimately be measured by their impact on people — especially children — who are disproportionately affected by climate change, environmental degradation, and socio-economic shocks,” he said.

World Vision Kenya reported that its outgoing 2020–2025 strategy reached 9.4 million children in 32 counties, including 2.2 million through direct programming, while 1.27 million children were protected from violence.

During the same period, about 900,000 people gained access to clean water, supported by an investment of approximately USD 470 million.

Building on these gains, the new strategy seeks to significantly scale up impact, targeting vulnerable populations such as 3.04 million children living in extreme poverty and more than 343,000 children with disabilities.

The plan will prioritise integrated interventions across key sectors, including child protection and education, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), environment and climate change, food security and livelihoods, health and nutrition, disaster risk management, and peacebuilding.

Dr Ng’eno noted that the strategy aligns closely with national development priorities, including the government’s campaign to grow 15 billion trees by 2032 and ongoing efforts to expand climate-resilient water and sanitation services.

He observed that only 59 per cent of Kenyans have access to safe drinking water, while just 29 per cent have access to improved sanitation, highlighting the need for sustained investment and coordinated partnerships.

With development financing under increasing pressure globally, the Principal Secretary emphasised the importance of deepening collaboration with national and county governments, bilateral partners, and the private sector.

He cited the Salgaa Local Area Programme in Nakuru County, supported by an annual county contribution of Sh20 million, as an example of a successful localised partnership delivering impact at the community level.

Dr Ng’eno pledged government support for the implementation of the strategy through policy alignment, technical collaboration, joint advocacy for climate finance, and strengthened coordination at the county level.

The launch event featured presentations on achievements under the previous strategy, community testimonies, and a detailed rollout of the new WASH business plan.

Faith leaders led a dedication ceremony before the strategy was formally unveiled.

The event was attended by Principal Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs Aurelia Rono, a representative of Health PS Mary Muthoni, Dr Naomi Mutie, World Vision Kenya Board Chair David Githanga, World Vision East Africa Regional Leader Lilian Dodgo, National Director Gilbert Kamanga, NCCK’s Alphonse Kanga, and other stakeholders.
