Former Rapper Balendra ‘Balen’ Shah Set to Become Nepal’s Prime Minister

Former rapper Balendra Shah is poised to become Nepal’s next prime minister after his political movement secured a dramatic victory in the country’s latest parliamentary elections.

The 35-year-old leader, widely known as Balen, rose from Nepal’s underground hip-hop scene to become one of the country’s most recognizable political figures.

His rise has been fueled largely by young voters who have grown frustrated with traditional political parties and allegations of corruption within the political establishment.

Before entering politics, Shah built a reputation in Nepal’s music scene as a socially conscious rapper whose lyrics often addressed corruption, governance failures, and the struggles facing ordinary citizens.

He later trained as a structural engineer and worked in the construction sector before making his surprise entry into politics.

Shah first shocked Nepal’s political establishment in 2022 when he won the Kathmandu mayoral race, defeating candidates backed by major political parties.

His victory in the capital city was widely interpreted as a protest vote by young urban voters seeking fresh leadership.

Kathmandu, Nepal’s largest city, had long been dominated by mainstream political parties such as the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), making Shah’s independent win particularly significant.

In the latest parliamentary elections, reform-minded candidates aligned with Shah surged across the country, dramatically reducing the influence of Nepal’s traditional political parties.

Preliminary results indicate that Shah’s allies and political movement secured a strong share of seats in Nepal’s parliament, putting him in a position to lead the next government.

One of the most symbolic victories came when Shah defeated veteran political leader K. P. Sharma Oli in a key constituency battle.

Oli, a former prime minister and one of Nepal’s most influential politicians, has been a dominant figure in the country’s political landscape for years.

The defeat of such an established leader highlighted the scale of political change unfolding in Nepal.

Young voters, many of whom organized through social media platforms, rallied behind Shah’s campaign message of transparency, anti-corruption reforms, and economic modernization.

Nepal has faced mounting challenges in recent years, including rising youth unemployment, slow economic growth, and frustration with political instability that has seen frequent changes in government.

For many voters, Shah represents a break from the traditional political elite that has governed Nepal since the country transitioned to a federal democratic republic in 2008.

Despite his strong electoral momentum, Shah faces significant challenges if he officially takes office as prime minister.
