Kenyan comedian and media personality Oga Obinna has announced he is taking a break from helping people publicly after facing online accusations and conspiracy theories linking him to the death of Gengetone artist Shalkido.
The announcement comes days after Obinna was criticized online following Shalkido’s tragic death in a hit-and-run accident along Thika Road.
The former Sailor’s Gang member had been hospitalized with severe injuries, including internal bleeding and a broken leg, before succumbing while undergoing treatment.
According to Obinna, the backlash that followed left him questioning whether it is worth extending kindness in public. He expressed frustration at what he called ‘ungrateful and toxic reactions’ from social media users, some of whom accused him of having a hand in the musician’s death.
“You help people and then the same people or their friends turn around and accuse you of things you have nothing to do with,” Obinna said. “It’s exhausting. I’ve decided to stop handling such matters personally.”
Before the accident, Obinna and Shalkido had reportedly been in contact. The comedian had often supported the musician, including helping him financially and fueling his motorbike on several occasions.
Many expected Obinna, given his close connection to the late artist, to take charge of the fundraising effort. However, he declined, saying that while he would still support the family, he would only do so through official family representatives — not through his personal accounts or direct involvement.
Soon after news of Shalkido’s death spread, social media platforms were flooded with conspiracy theories. Some users speculated that Obinna’s earlier association with the late musician and his presence at several recent events were suspicious. Others went as far as linking the tragedy to ‘ritual’ claims — allegations Obinna dismissed as “ridiculous and malicious.”
“People are so quick to create wild stories,” he said. “A young man loses his life in a tragic accident, and instead of mourning, people start looking for someone to blame. It’s unfair to the family and to me.”
The comedian urged the public to allow the family to grieve and to stop spreading misinformation. He maintained that his only relationship with Shalkido was friendship and mentorship within the entertainment industry.
In response to the online hostility, Obinna said he would pause all personal acts of charity and assistance until further notice. He explained that he has frequently found himself helping people in need — whether struggling artists, fans, or friends — but that each time, the goodwill tends to be twisted online.
“Nimejichuna maskio, nijikute tena. Wanadamu hawana shukrani. Saa hii kila mtu apambane tu. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. I’d rather when I don’t.” —
