Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) President Zubeidah Kananu has announced her departure from Standard Group PLC after 18 years, marking the end of a significant chapter in her journalism career.
In a message to colleagues and fellow editors, Kananu described her time at the media house as “filled with growth, learning, challenges, and friendships,” noting that the experiences had shaped her both personally and professionally.
“This transition marks the beginning of a new phase for me, but my dedication to the Kenya Editors Guild and to our collective mission remains steadfast,” she said.
Kananu, who was re-elected KEG president in May 2025, assured members that her focus will now be on strengthening ethical journalism, safeguarding press freedom, and mentoring young media leaders across the country.
Her exit from Standard Group comes at a time when the media industry is grappling with shrinking revenues, newsroom layoffs, and increasing threats to press independence.
Industry players say her leadership at KEG will be critical in steering conversations on the future of journalism in Kenya.
Kananu also rallied editors to participate in the upcoming Annual Editors’ Convention set for November in Kilifi, describing it as a platform to chart stronger frameworks for media sustainability and professional standards.
She concluded her message with gratitude: “I look forward to building even greater impact with you as we prepare for our Annual Editors’ Convention in Kilifi this November and beyond.”
