NANDI, Kenya – The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has invited bids for a Sh400 million road upgrade project in Kapsabet Municipality, marking the first phase of a long-awaited infrastructure programme in Nandi County.
The tender, which covers 5.3 kilometres of roads, follows a directive by President William Ruto after a request by Nandi Governor Stephen Sang to improve the municipality’s urban road network.
In a statement issued on Monday, Governor Sang welcomed the move, saying the project signalled the fulfilment of a commitment made by the President to residents of Kapsabet.
“I sincerely thank His Excellency President William Ruto for honouring his promise to upgrade roads within Kapsabet Municipality. The first phase has now been advertised, and we appreciate the clear commitment that the second phase will be implemented in the next financial year beginning July 2026,” Sang said.
I wish to sincerely thank His Excellency the President Dr. @WilliamsRuto for honoring his promise, following our request, to upgrade roads within Kapsabet Municipality. We greatly appreciate that the first phase of the project covering 5.3 kilometres has now been advertised for
According to the governor, the second phase will involve an additional 6.7 kilometres of roads, further expanding the town’s transport infrastructure.
Sang said the road works form part of a broader infrastructure expansion plan being jointly implemented by the national and county governments.
The projects include upgrades to water and sewerage systems, construction of a modern market, a stadium and a bus park.
“These initiatives will significantly transform Kapsabet Municipality and help us achieve the level of development we envision for our people,” he said.
The governor also disclosed that discussions are ongoing, under the President’s guidance, to upgrade more roads in shopping centres and villages across Nandi County.
He singled out Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davies Chirchir for his leadership in steering the project through KURA and other agencies, and praised Head of Public Service Felix Koskei for his role in coordinating the implementation of development programmes in the county.
Governor Sang further acknowledged the support of Nandi Members of Parliament, led by Emgwen MP Josses Lelmengit, saying their contributions were key to securing the project.
Once complete, the upgraded roads are expected to improve mobility, boost trade and enhance service delivery within Kapsabet and its surrounding areas.
