NAIROBI, Kenya — Police and aviation authorities have provided updated details as investigations continue into the helicopter crash that claimed six lives, including that of Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johana Ng’eno, on Saturday, February 28, 2026, in Mosop, Nandi County.
A Eurocopter AS350 helicopter (registration 5Y-DSB) crashed shortly after takeoff from Endebes, heading toward Mosoriot around 4:30 pm, according to official reports.
The aircraft plunged into the Chepkiep area, exploded and burst into flames on impact.
Police and rescue teams were among the first responders at the scene following reports of an explosion and thick smoke rising from the crash site.
Ongoing Police and Aviation Investigations
The National Police Service has urged calm and patience as the probe continues, assuring Kenyans that all relevant authorities are working diligently to determine the cause of the tragedy.
Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said investigators are coordinating closely with aviation experts as part of the broader inquiry.
In a separate statement, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed it has initiated a formal investigation into the crash.
The authority said its Aircraft Accident Investigation Department (AAID) is examining all aspects of the accident, including flight records, aircraft maintenance history, weather conditions, pilot communications and witness testimonies.
Authorities have also collected wreckage and debris from the crash site, which will be analysed by forensic specialists to identify any mechanical issues or irregularities.
“In accordance with standard operating procedures and international civil aviation guidelines, the management of the investigation into the cause of the accident has formally been taken over by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Department,” the police spokesperson said in a statement.
Identification of Victims and Police Statements
Six bodies were retrieved from the crash site and transported to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.
Hospital officials have confirmed that the remains were badly damaged and burnt, making immediate identification impossible, police said, and forensic teams are preparing them for formal identification in Nairobi.
Police have stressed that the next of kin will be notified directly once formal identification is complete and are calling for respect and sensitivity amid the families’ grief.
Political Reactions and Calls for Transparency
The crash has sparked national concern and calls for a thorough, transparent investigation from political leaders and members of the public.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka urged swift action by authorities, emphasizing the need for openness and support for the bereaved families.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also weighed in, calling for an independent probe into the crash, including potentially involving international investigators, although eyewitness reports have suggested adverse weather played a significant role.
What Happens Next
The KCAA and police have said findings from the ongoing investigations will be released publicly once they are verified.
In addition to mechanical and weather factors, authorities are examining all possible causes, including human and technical elements, to ensure accurate conclusions.
The crash has intensified discussions on aviation safety standards in Kenya, especially for private and chartered flights.
Officials say lessons learned from this inquiry may shape future safety protocols and regulatory measures.
