MOGADISHU, Somalia — The Somali National Army (SNA), working alongside the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and international partners, has carried out a successful joint operation against Al-Shabaab militants in the Lower Shabelle region.
The operation, conducted near the Bulunagaad Forward Operating Base (FOB) and supported by air assets, led to multiple engagements with the extremist group.
Security officials said more than 30 Al-Shabaab fighters were killed, while several others were wounded during the coordinated ground and air assault.
According to a statement from the joint forces, the militants had earlier launched attacks on SNA and AUSSOM troops who were pursuing Al-Shabaab remnants pushed out of key coastal areas, including Gendershe and the Jilib–Marka axis.
The pursuit forms part of ongoing SNA-led operations dubbed Operation Hidden Sword, aimed at dismantling the group’s presence along strategic routes and coastal towns.
“The joint forces acted swiftly and decisively to neutralize terrorist threats targeting both security personnel and civilians in the area,” the statement said.
The SNA and AUSSOM reaffirmed their commitment to protecting civilian lives, maintaining security, and ensuring the safe movement of humanitarian assistance and logistical supplies to affected communities.
Military officials said joint operations will continue in Lower Shabelle and other regions as part of a broader strategy to degrade Al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities and promote lasting peace and stability in Somalia.
