NAIROBI, Kenya – Baringo Senator William Cheptumo will be buried on March 1, 2025, at his home in Bartabwa Ward, following a series of funeral events to honor his legacy.
Cheptumo, 57, passed away on February 16 while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital. He had been battling a medical condition for some time, receiving care both locally and abroad.
A funeral service will be held in Nairobi on February 27 at Milimani AIC Church, according to former Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui, who chairs the burial planning committee.
Additional memorial meetings will take place in Kabarnet and at Chelugui’s Tunoiwo home, as well as in Nairobi on multiple dates leading up to the burial.
Chelugui described Cheptumo as a dedicated public servant, accomplished lawyer, and respected politician.
“He touched many lives, and his legacy is a testament to hard work, humility, and a deep commitment to justice and fairness,” he said.
Cheptumo, a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) senator, was elected in the 2022 General Election, defeating KANU chairman Gideon Moi.
Before joining the Senate, he served as the Baringo North MP from 2008 to 2013 and later became the Chairperson of the Senate National Security, Defense, and Foreign Relations Committee.
President William Ruto mourned his passing, calling him a progressive leader who was deeply committed to transforming Baringo. “He was vocal, hardworking, and a tireless champion for his people,” Ruto said in a statement.
Cheptumo was also the founder of Cheptumo and Company Advocates, a law firm that cemented his reputation as a sharp legal mind involved in key constitutional and judicial reforms.
His widow, Anne Cheptumo, and the family have received an outpouring of condolences from government leaders, colleagues, and the church.
