NAIROBI, Kenya – Businessman and political figure Philip Nahashon Aroko has been released from custody and will now serve as a state witness in the ongoing murder investigation of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, marking a dramatic shift in a case that has gripped the nation for weeks.
Aroko, who was previously under intense scrutiny as a primary suspect, was freed after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reviewed the available evidence and determined he could provide crucial testimony in the high-profile case.
His release comes as three other individuals remain formally charged in connection with the killing of the MP, whose death sparked political shockwaves and demands for swift justice.
Until recently, Aroko faced serious legal hurdles, including a May 2025 High Court ruling that overturned an earlier decision by the JKIA Chief Magistrate’s Court granting him bail.
Justice Kavenza, who presided over the matter, sided with the prosecution’s request to detain Aroko for longer, citing the sensitive and complex nature of the inquiry.
“The application is found to be merited,” the judge ruled. “Temporary detention is necessary to allow investigators to pursue critical leads without infringing on the accused’s constitutional rights.”
Aroko was held at Kileleshwa Police Station until May 26, 2025, as detectives deepened their probe.
At the time, prosecutors argued that releasing him could jeopardize ongoing investigations, expressing concern that he might interfere with witnesses or co-accused individuals.
The court’s decision to revoke his bail underscored the state’s caution in handling a politically charged case with wide public interest.
Throughout the investigation, Aroko has repeatedly denied any involvement in the legislator’s murder.
Now expected to testify on behalf of the state, Aroko’s cooperation could significantly influence the direction and outcome of the trial.
The murder of Charles Ong’ondo Were has triggered widespread outrage and speculation within political circles, with leaders across the aisle demanding transparent investigations and swift accountability.
