KAKAMEGA, Kenya —The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has charged a man with murdering his brother in Kakamega County, highlighting a rare case of familial violence involving a sports figure.
Denmark Muchiti Abung’ana appeared before the Kakamega High Court, facing charges of killing Silas Shihemi Abung’ana around 8 pm at Masiakali Village.
The alleged offence contravenes Section 203 read with Section 204 of the Penal Code, which addresses unlawful killings.
Court proceedings revealed that the deceased was a celebrated footballer affiliated with Kakamega Homeboyz. His death has sent shockwaves through the local sports community, given his prominence in regional football circuits.
Presiding over the case, Hon. Alice Bett heard the accused deny the charges. He was remanded in custody pending the next hearing, scheduled for March 16, 2026, when the court will determine whether he qualifies for bail.
The prosecution was led by Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Lazarus Sirtuy. Legal experts note that cases involving violent deaths within families often draw heightened public and judicial scrutiny, especially when the victim holds a public profile.
The matter underscores ongoing concerns about domestic conflicts escalating to fatal outcomes in Kenya, as well as the responsibility of the criminal justice system to ensure fair trial processes while balancing public interest.
