Dr. Mercy Mwangangi Cautions Kenyans Against SHA Impersonators Demanding Money

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Social Health Authority (SHA) has warned the public to beware of fraudsters impersonating its employees and swindling Kenyans seeking registration or assistance with health insurance services.

In a statement dated November 6, 2025, and signed by Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mercy Mwangangi, the authority said it is alarmed by an increase in reports of criminals claiming they can “help with registration or speed up SHA services at a fee.”

“We are deeply saddened and concerned to learn that some members of the public have been defrauded by criminals impersonating SHA employees,” said Dr. Mwangangi. “It pains us greatly that dishonest individuals would exploit the trust Kenyans have placed in us for their own gain.”

The authority clarified that registration with SHA is free and that its staff never ask for money or personal details, including M-Pesa PINs, from members of the public.

SHA urged Kenyans who encounter suspected fraudsters to immediately report the matter to the police or reach the authority directly through its hotline 147 or via fraud@sha.go.ke.

“Your safety, dignity and confidence in our healthcare system matter deeply to us,” the notice reads.

Official registration channels

The authority outlined that legitimate registration can only be done through:

  • USSD code: *147#
  • Web portals: www.afyayangu.go.ke and www.sha.go.ke
  • County offices, Huduma Centres, and Community Health Promoters wearing official SHA-branded vests.

SHA emphasised that all payments for contributions are made only via the official M-Pesa business number 200222 or through designated banks announced by the authority.

The public was cautioned never to share personal details or hand over their phones to anyone purporting to assist with registration.

Dr. Mwangangi also noted that any SHA outreach or registration drives are communicated only through verified official channels, local authorities, or the media, and urged Kenyans to report suspicious individuals to the nearest police station.

The authority reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring transparent, safe and fraud-free access to social health insurance services.
