EACC Arrests Kakamega Civil Registration Officials for Alleged Bribery Scheme

Date:

KAKAMEGA, Kenya – Two officials from the Kakamega Civil Registration Department were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly soliciting and accepting bribes from applicants seeking civil registration documents.

Boniface Mutsunga, the Civil Registrar at the Kakamega Huduma Centre, and Amos Yegon, a Civil Registration Officer, are accused of accepting payments to expedite the processing of documents, including birth certificates.

The arrest followed an investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), which revealed that the bribes were funneled through a privately operated M-Pesa payment Till Number, suggesting a well-coordinated bribery network.

EACC officials stated that the two suspects had just received Ksh. 2,500 when they were apprehended, allegedly to facilitate the processing of a birth certificate for an applicant.
