NAIROBI, Kenya- The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested a water and sewerage officer in Nakuru over allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe from a member of the public.
The suspect, identified as Leonard Cheruiyot Mutai, is an employee of Nakuru Water and Sewerage Company, where he serves as a leak detection officer.
Arrest Following Public Complaint
According to the EACC, the arrest was made on March 23, 2026, after a resident lodged a complaint accusing the officer of demanding Sh15,000 to facilitate the replacement of a confiscated water meter in Langa Langa Estate.
Acting on the report, investigators launched an operation that culminated in the suspect’s arrest while allegedly receiving the bribe.
Cash Recovered During Operation
During the arrest, EACC officers recovered:
- Sh15,000 is believed to be the bribe money
- Sh100,000 concealed in socks
- Sh18,000 found in the suspect’s coat pocket
The commission did not immediately clarify the source of the additional cash but said investigations are ongoing.

Processing and Release on Bail
The suspect was taken to the EACC’s South Rift Regional Office in Nakuru for processing before being transferred to Central Police Station, where he was detained.
He was later released on a cash bail of Sh20,000, pending the completion of investigations and possible prosecution.
The anti-graft agency has urged members of the public to continue reporting corruption cases and to resist paying bribes.
EACC officials say such arrests are part of broader efforts to clean up public service delivery, particularly in essential sectors such as water and sanitation, where corruption can directly affect access to basic services.
The commission reiterated its commitment to pursuing individuals who abuse their positions for personal gain, warning that more operations are ongoing across the country.
