BUNGOMA, Kenya — The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has summoned 22 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) and staff of the County Assembly of Bungoma in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged fraud and theft of public funds.
The probe centres on claims of a fake benchmarking trip to Uganda undertaken in 2019 ahead of the lighting of a Christmas tree at the Governor’s Office.
According to investigators, the combined cost of the benchmarking trip and the Christmas tree lighting ceremony amounted to Sh6,569,000.
The EACC has directed the 22 MCAs and assembly officials to appear before detectives at its Western Regional Office in Bungoma on various dates between February 26, 2026 and March 9, 2026.

The anti-graft agency is seeking to establish whether public funds were irregularly spent and whether the alleged benchmarking visit took place as documented.
Sources familiar with the investigation say detectives are examining payment records, travel documents and other financial approvals linked to the trip and related expenditures.
The summons marks a significant development in the long-running inquiry, which focuses on accountability and prudent use of public resources at the county level.
The EACC has not ruled out further action depending on the findings of the investigation.
