NAKURU, Kenya — Police in Nakuru County have launched investigations into the gruesome killing of an elderly couple whose bodies were discovered inside their home in Muthiga village, Salgaa, on Sunday.
The victims, 90-year-old Joseph Kihiti Ndegwa and his wife 63-year-old Bethrosa Wanjiku Githuri, are believed to have been killed days earlier in what police describe as a “violent and deliberate attack.”
According to preliminary reports, the couple’s lifeless bodies were found by concerned neighbours after they failed to attend church — a Sunday routine they rarely missed.
“Church members and residents visited the home and found the front door locked. At the back, we were greeted by a pool of blood and an open door,” said area Chief Stephen Nderitu.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found Kihiti’s body on the bed and Wanjiku’s in the living room, both bearing multiple injuries.
Investigators say there were no signs of forced entry or theft, deepening the mystery surrounding their deaths.
Rongai Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer Donata Atieno confirmed that a homicide team has been assigned to the case.
“The victims were subjected to extreme violence. We are pursuing all leads to establish the motive and identify those behind the attack,” she said.
Family members and residents described the couple as peaceful and well-liked farmers with no known disputes.
“Why would anyone think of taking my father’s life at such an age?” asked their distraught son, John Njogu, as relatives and villagers gathered at the homestead in disbelief.
Police believe the killings may have occurred on Friday night, though the bodies were not discovered until Sunday afternoon.
The remains were moved to the Nakuru County Mortuary pending postmortem examinations.
The incident has left the quiet farming community of Muthiga gripped with fear. Police have urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
