EMBU, Kenya- Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP) leader and former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti has strongly condemned the brutal killing of a youth official affiliated with his party, terming the incident a chilling reflection of rising political intolerance in the country.
The victim, 24-year-old Bernard Kithaka, was allegedly attacked and killed on Wednesday night in Muminji Ward following a confrontation reportedly linked to political allegiance.
Preliminary reports indicate that the dispute erupted after Kithaka declined to wear regalia associated with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), triggering a heated exchange that later turned fatal.
Speaking to journalists on Friday morning at the Lenny Kivuti Convention Centre in Embu, Kivuti expressed profound grief over the loss, describing Kithaka as a vibrant and committed young leader whose life was cut short at its prime.
“This is a painful and heartbreaking loss, not just to Bernard’s family, but to the youth of Embu and the nation at large. No Kenyan should lose their life simply because of political differences,” Kivuti said.
“We must reject a culture where intimidation and violence replace dialogue and democratic choice.”
Kivuti called on security agencies to move swiftly and thoroughly in investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing.
He urged law enforcement authorities to ensure that those responsible are identified, arrested, and prosecuted without delay.
The DEP Party Leader warned that the incident signals a dangerous escalation in political tensions, particularly at the grassroots level, where rival supporters often clash.
He emphasized that democracy thrives on diversity of opinion and freedom of association, not coercion or fear.
“Political competition should never turn into political persecution,” he added.
“If we allow intolerance to take root, we risk shrinking the very democratic space that so many Kenyans fought hard to secure. Leaders across all parties must take responsibility and rein in their supporters before more lives are lost.”
The killing comes at a time when the country is experiencing heightened political activity, with leaders intensifying grassroots mobilization efforts.
Observers have raised concerns over growing hostility among rival factions, warning that unchecked rhetoric and provocation could further inflame tensions.
Kivuti appealed to residents of Embu County to remain calm and avoid retaliatory actions, stressing that justice must be pursued through lawful channels.
He also extended his condolences to Kithaka’s family, promising that the party would stand with them during the difficult period.
As investigations continue, the tragic death of the young party official has sparked renewed debate about the need for political tolerance, restraint, and respect for differing views in Kenya’s evolving democratic landscape.
