NAIROBI, Kenya– A quiet, powerful wave of emotion swept through Kang’o Ka Jaramogi on Saturday as Beryl Achieng’ Odinga—sister to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga—was laid to rest at her ancestral home in Bondo.
Mourners from across Kenya’s political spectrum filled the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga homestead, coming together to honour a woman remembered for brilliance, conviction, and a steady, unshakeable spirit.
Tributes That Painted a Life of Depth and Courage
Speaker after speaker stepped forward with memories that spoke to Beryl’s intellect and inner strength. For her family, these qualities were evident from childhood. Her sister Wenwa Odinga recalled a defining moment from their youth, when Beryl boldly stood up to their father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga—a gesture that, in hindsight, revealed the confidence and moral clarity that shaped her adult life.
The ceremony carried deeply personal reflections, including a moving tribute from Mama Ida Odinga, who shared the pain of her final visit to Beryl in hospital. She described seeing her surrounded by medical equipment, unable to speak, and deciding teo protect Railsa from witnessing her condition because of their closeness.
Ida called the loss “a heavy blow coming too soon after Baba,” noting that Beryl’s warmth, intellect, and quiet strength had long anchored the family through both public life and private trials.
Leaders Celebrate a Career Rooted in Integrity and Service
ODM leader and elder brother Oburu Oginga thanked Kenyans for their support, emphasising that Beryl’s life reflected humility, commitment to service, and a grounded sense of personal integrity. His sentiments echoed across political lines as leaders highlighted her professional reach in law, development, and regional policy.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga described Beryl as a formidable mind whose work influenced both Kenya and Zimbabwe. She noted that her contributions to development had created a legacy extending far beyond her family name.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka added that Beryl’s approach to planning—anchored in order, functionality, dignity, and beauty—should serve as a blueprint for Kenya’s long-term development vision. He argued that if Kenya hopes to reach Singapore-level efficiency, it must embrace the ethos that guided her work.
DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa also delivered condolences on behalf of his party, praying for comfort and unity for the Odinga family as they navigate the loss.
A Life Where Professional Excellence Met Deep Family Commitment
Those who knew Beryl best described a woman who balanced a demanding professional life with unwavering devotion to family. Her colleagues admired her disciplined approach to public service, while loved ones remembered her as someone whose integrity never wavered—no matter the boardroom, policy meeting, or family gathering.
As Beryl was finally laid to rest at Kang’o, the message from mourners was clear: her courage, intellect, and principled leadership left a legacy that will continue shaping conversations about development, justice, and service in Kenya.
In a homestead steeped in the nation’s history, she was honoured with the dignity and peace befitting a life lived with purpose.
