End of the Road: EACC Sleuths Arrest 2 Imposters Defrauding Kenyans in Bungoma County

Date:

BUNGOMA, Kenya—The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has confirmed the arrest of two imposters who defrauded members of the public in Bungoma County.

The incident occurred on Monday, January 27, 2025, after the Anti-Graft Commission arrested two suspects who had been conning public officials and members of the public, pretending to be EACC Directors who could terminate ongoing corruption cases in exchange for money.

Which culprits did the EACC arrest

Those arrested include Tobias Singila Wekesa (23 years), posing as the EACC Director in charge of the EACC Kakamega Office. Notably, such an office does not exist, as the Commission’s regional office for the Western Region is based in Bungoma.

According to a statement from EACC, the suspect informed the EACC that he is a third-year student at Kibabii University.

Another suspect was identified as Sharon Nanjala Anyango (26 years), posing as a senior EACC director based in Nairobi.

“She claims to have graduated from Kibabii University in 2024. The two suspects were apprehended in an NG-CDF office, which they had raided, claiming to be on official duty to investigate NG-CDF projects,” the statement from EACC reads in part.

The duo demanded a bribe of Sh 150,000 from the complainants, promising to drop the investigation and “forgive” them. The complainants notified the EACC, which mounted an operation leading to the suspects’ arrest,” EACC said.

The two are currently held at the EACC Western Regional Offices in Bungoma, where they are recording statements.

“Noting the numerous incidents where individuals have lost substantial sums of money to fraudsters impersonating EACC officials, the Commission calls upon members of the public to remain vigilant and not fall prey to such schemes,” EACC cautioned Kenyans.

The anti-graft body further said that any suspected imposter should be promptly reported to the EACC through toll-free No. 1551 or email address report@integrity.go.ke for action.

Who is the new EACC boss

Y News previously reported that EACC is experiencing a new dawn following the swearing-in of its newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Abdi Ahmed Mohamud.

During his swearing-in ceremony before Chief Justice Martha Koome at the Supreme Court, Mohamud promised to commit unambiguously and faithfully to his oath of office.

Mohamud takes over from the former CEO, Twalib Mbarak, who exited the Commission on Friday, January 10, 2025, upon the expiry of his six-year term.

“I wish to offer my unequivocal commitment and fidelity to the oath of office that I subscribed to in combating corruption, economic crime, and unethical conduct in the country,” he said.
