SIAYA, Kenya – Five fishermen have lost their lives after their boat capsized in Lake Victoria near the Dho-Goye area on Sunday evening, authorities confirmed.
The tragic incident occurred when strong winds hit the vessel while the fishermen were on a routine fishing trip. Three others remain missing as search operations continue.
John Ochieng’, chairman of the Usenge Beach Management Unit (BMU), said seven fishermen were on board at the time of the accident.
“Five fishermen drowned after the boat capsized due to strong winds. One fisherman survived by clinging to the overturned boat until fellow fishermen rescued him,” Ochieng’ stated.
Two of the victims’ bodies have already been recovered and taken to Got Agulu Sub-county Hospital mortuary, while BMU officials and local fishermen continue to comb the waters for the remaining three.
Authorities have urged fishermen to exercise caution, particularly during periods of strong winds, as search and rescue efforts remain ongoing.
