Four Arrested Over Sh40 Million Fake TSC Recruitment Scam in Bomet

Date:

BOMET, Kenya – Detectives have arrested four suspects in Bomet County in connection with a sophisticated fake recruitment scheme that allegedly defrauded job seekers of more than Sh40 million using forged Teachers Service Commission (TSC) appointment letters.

The suspects include David Kemei, a TSC Director based in Konoin Sub-County; Rosebella Chepkemoi Korir, a former Bomet County Woman Representative aspirant; and two teachers, Leonard Siele Towett and Mercy Cherotich.

According to investigators, the group targeted unemployed teachers and desperate job seekers, demanding large sums of money in exchange for fraudulent letters promising permanent and pensionable employment with the TSC.

Detectives say many victims were pushed into financial distress, with some reportedly taking loans, selling property, or draining their savings in the hope of securing teaching jobs that never materialised.

The four were arraigned before the Bomet Law Courts, where detectives obtained 14-day custodial orders to allow for further investigations into the alleged fraud.

Authorities believe the scam was not confined to Bomet County. Investigations indicate the network may extend to Kericho, Narok, Kisii, and Nyamira counties, with efforts ongoing to identify and arrest additional suspects linked to the syndicate.

In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said it is working closely with the TSC to dismantle criminal networks that exploit job seekers and erode public confidence in government institutions.

The DCI has cautioned members of the public to remain vigilant and to verify recruitment information through official TSC channels, emphasising that the commission does not charge any fees for employment.

Members of the public who may have fallen victim to the scam and have not yet reported are urged to come forward.

Reports can be made anonymously through #FichuaKwaDCI via the toll-free number 0800 722 203, WhatsApp 0709 570 000, or at the nearest police station.
