Gachagua Urges LSK to Defend Constitution After Kanjama’s Election as President

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has congratulated Charles Kanjama on his election as the new President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

Gachagua urged the legal fraternity to take a firm stance in defending the Constitution and the rule of law and more so now when the country heads to an electioneering period.

In a statement, Gachagua praised Kanjama’s commitment to constitutional fidelity and respect for legal norms, asserting that these attributes must have persuaded his peers in the legal community that he was the right choice to lead the society.

“My hearty congratulations to SC Charles Kanjama on your election as President of the Law Society of Kenya,” Gachagua said.

He also extended his best wishes to the council members elected alongside Kanjama, acknowledging the collective responsibility they bear in guiding the society through turbulent times.

Gachagua’s endorsement of Kanjama’s leadership came amid heightened national debate over constitutional governance, with the former Deputy President arguing that the Government has been flouting constitutional principles with what he described as “sheer impunity” and replacing the rule of law with “goonism.”

In the statement, Gachagua noted widespread public expectation that under Kanjama’s stewardship, the LSK should play a proactive role in safeguarding the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and promoting strict adherence to the rule of law.

He said Kenyans are hopeful that the society, under its new leadership, will serve as a steadfast bulwark against arbitrary actions and rights violations.

He also called on the LSK to protect national assets from being sold without meaningful public participation and to intensify efforts against corruption, which he said has weakened public trust in governance.

“Kenyans are very hopeful that LSK will lead from the front in protecting national assets from arbitrary sale and vigorously fight the theft of public funds and the use of the same to bribe Kenyans for political support,” Gachagua said.

Highlighting the importance of the integrity of the electoral process ahead of the 2027 General Elections, Gachagua urged the LSK to hold the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) accountable, ensuring that the electoral body conducts a free, fair, credible and verifiable election.

He emphasised the need for a level playing field and transparent procedures that will foster public confidence in the outcome.

“Kenyans are optimistic that LSK will lead in keeping the IEBC on its toes to ensure a free, fair, credible and verifiable 2027 General Elections by smoothing the processes and providing a level playing field,” he said.
