Gachagua Denies Orchestrating Gen Z Protests, Calls for Youth to Register as Voters

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed allegations that he was the mastermind behind last year’s Gen Z-led anti-government protests, which forced President William Ruto to withdraw the Finance Bill 2024 and restructure his Cabinet.

In an interview on Tuesday, Gachagua refuted claims that he played a role in mobilizing the youth-led demonstrations, suggesting that the accusations were part of a broader political scheme to remove him from office.

He argued that his critics were attempting to brand him as a rebel within the Kenya Kwanza government to justify a push for his impeachment.

“I did not lead Gen Z, nor am I their leader, but they are our good children and will play a significant role in the 2027 elections,” Gachagua said.

He insisted that while he was not behind the movement, he supported their demand for a more just Kenya.

He also alleged that state operatives had fueled the protests to discredit him due to his advocacy for Mt Kenya region unity.

Gachagua urged young people to translate their activism into electoral power by registering as voters ahead of the 2027 general election.

“I support their cause, but they must move beyond the internet and register as voters. The leadership of this country will be determined by Gen Z if they take this step,” he said.

At the height of the protests, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) launched a probe into Gachagua’s alleged involvement, summoning some of his allies to record statements regarding their role in the demonstrations.

The protests, which erupted over economic grievances and governance issues, significantly reshaped Kenya’s political landscape, prompting President Ruto to make sweeping policy changes to quell public unrest.
