NAIROBI, Kenya — The Galana Kulalu Bridge linking Kilifi and Tana River counties is nearing completion, with works now 90 per cent done, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has announced.
Omollo said the remaining task involves completing the bridge deck, noting that about 120 workers are currently deployed on site — underscoring the project’s contribution to local employment.
Once completed, the bridge is expected to significantly improve access and transport between the two coastal counties, while playing a key role in supporting the Galana–Kulalu Food Security Project.
Spanning the Galana River, the bridge will provide a direct connection between the food production zone and the Malindi–Sala Gate Road, easing the movement of farm inputs and agricultural produce to markets.
“Crossing the Galana River, the bridge is a critical component of the revitalised Galana–Kulalu food security initiative. It eliminates the long detours previously made via the Baricho Bridge and significantly reduces transport bottlenecks,” Omollo said.
The Interior PS credited the ministry with coordinating implementation, enhancing security surveillance in the area, and linking surrounding communities to government services and employment opportunities tied to the project.
The Galana–Kulalu Food Security Project was relaunched by President William Ruto on January 4, 2023, as part of the government’s strategy to boost food production, create jobs and reduce reliance on imports.
President Ruto has repeatedly cited the project as a key pillar of his administration’s economic agenda, anchored on agriculture-led growth and job creation.
“In the 2022 UDA manifesto, we committed to transforming lives by investing in agriculture, expanding access to affordable credit, creating millions of jobs and implementing universal healthcare,” the President has said.
Once operational, the Galana Kulalu Bridge is expected to strengthen regional trade, improve livelihoods and enhance food supply chains across the Coast region.
