GARISSA, Kenya — Police have arrested a fourth-year student at Garissa University after recovering 650 rolls of bhang during a targeted anti-narcotics operation within the institution.
Officers acting on credible intelligence carried out a raid at a student hostel on Tuesday, where the suspect was allegedly operating a drug distribution network inside the university.
The operation led to the recovery of the cannabis rolls, commonly known as bhang, believed to have been packaged for sale.
ONE ARRESTED IN GARISSA COUNTY FOLLOWING DRUG RAIDOfficers deployed at a higher learning institution in Garissa County yesterday acted on credible intelligence indicating that a student was involved in the sale and distribution of narcotic drugs within the school premises.
Police said the large quantity of the narcotic suggests an organised supply operation rather than personal use, raising fresh concerns over the infiltration of drugs into institutions of higher learning.
The suspect was taken into police custody and is expected to be arraigned in court to face charges related to the possession and trafficking of narcotic drugs.
Authorities warned that drug abuse and trafficking pose a growing threat to young people, particularly within learning institutions, where students remain vulnerable to exploitation by criminal networks.
“The National Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to combat drug trafficking and protect students from the dangers associated with narcotics,” police said in a statement.
The arrest comes amid intensified efforts by security agencies to crack down on drug networks targeting schools, colleges and universities across the country.
