Government Declares Parts of Narok County ‘Security Disturbed’ Amid Rising Violence

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The government has declared parts of Narok County security-disturbed and dangerous for 30 days as security operations are intensified to contain rising violence in the area.

In a notice published in a Special Issue of the Kenya Gazette dated December 19, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen invoked powers under the National Police Service Act to designate parts of Trans Mara West and Trans Mara South as insecure.

The affected areas include Nkararo in Trans Mara West, and Ololnyo-Orok, Siteti, Olorna, Comet, Riatik, Isokon, Keekarok, Kondagmet, Olkiloriti, Angata Barakoi, Kapkeres, Lolgorien Town and Mashangwa in Trans Mara South.

The declaration took effect on December 19 at 6.00pm and will remain in force for 30 days, unless withdrawn or extended through a further Gazette notice.

Murkomen said the move will allow security agencies to scale up operations and roll out peace-building interventions in a bid to restore calm.

“A dawn-to-dusk curfew is already in force, and security presence in the affected areas has been significantly enhanced,” the Cabinet Secretary said, adding that calm was gradually returning.

He noted that the government was engaging local leaders and security stakeholders to address the root causes of the conflict and prevent further escalation.

“The Government remains committed to ensuring that communities which have long lived together in peace and harmony bring an end to the current animosities and fully embrace peaceful coexistence,” Mr Murkomen said.
